[60mmtelescopeclub] Re: 1.25" Eyepieces
Show Details

Hi. I have accumulated a pretty large collection of eyepieces over the last 35 years including some of the classics like Meade Research Series and University Orthoscopics, Edmund RKEs, UO Konigs etc, so I know a decent eyepiece when I see one. I need more eyepieces like a hole in the head but those Seben Orbinars you mentioned got me interested because of their incredibly low price with free shipping. I could not resist so took a chance and ordered a 40mm and 25mm a few months ago. I was not expecting much at that price, but when they arrived I was pleasantly surprised with the quality for the price. They are nicely constructed all metal with chromed barrels threaded for filters and fold down eye cups. The optics are coated 4 element and compare to most decent 4 element Symmetric Plossls delivering well corrected images. The 40 mm has nice big eye and field lenses limited only by the inside diameter of the barrel and gives the widest field possible (43 degrees)with the 1.25 inch format. The 25 mm has a comfortable 45 degree field. Both eyepieces are very comfortable to use with just the right eye relief for their focal length. I was so impressed with the quality for the price I ordered a 15, 10, 6.5 and 4mm. They are all decent eyepieces worth far more than what they are going for especially the medium and short focal lengths that cost about the same or less than those cheaply made plastic body Kellners or MAs that abound on Ebay. The fields are not huge ranging from 41 to maximum of 48 degrees but the optical correction and sharpness are good even in my F5 Schmidt Newtonian. For your Meade 90mm 395 which has a 1000mm focal length a 10mm would provide a nice crisp medium high power view of Jupiter at 100x. A 25mm would be a good low power. I owned a Meade 395 in the past and it provided very decent planetary images up to at least 150X with 200x useful for close double Stars, Moon detail or Mars (Mars needs high power due to the small disk). You might want to start with the 25 and 10mm and perhaps add a good 2X barlow for 40, 80, 100, 200x. Or perhaps a 25mm and 15 mm with a 3x barlow for 40x, 67x, 120x, 200x.

Clear Skies,
Karl
